Stair carpet installation
Stairs are the hardest part of any carpet job, and they’re most of my photos. I’m Wayne Carlson. I’ve installed carpet for 34 years, the last 12 with my son. We wrap every step tight, open staircases included, and you get the price before anything’s booked.
- 34 years installing
- Open staircases, every tread wrapped
- One-year warranty on the work

Areas we serve
I’m based in Mission and come to you. Free estimates in Mission, Maple Ridge, Abbotsford and Pitt Meadows. Anywhere else it’s $100, credited back if you go ahead.
What stair carpet costs
Every staircase is priced when I measure it, before anything’s booked. You buy the carpet, and I tell you how much to get. What goes into the price:
- How many steps you have
- Open sides that need wrapping
- Taking up and hauling away the old carpet
- Transitions at the top and bottom
- Picking up your carpet from the store, about $50
Before you call
What people ask me about carpeting stairs.
Is it hard to install carpet on stairs?
Yes. It’s the hardest part of any carpet job: every step gets wrapped and kicked tight by hand, one at a time. On an open staircase the sides of every tread get wrapped too. Stair carpet that isn’t tight comes loose right where you step on it most.
How much does it cost to carpet stairs?
It depends on the staircase: how many steps, and whether open sides need wrapping. You get the price when I measure, before anything’s booked. The estimate is free in Mission, Maple Ridge, Abbotsford and Pitt Meadows, and $100 anywhere else, credited back if you go ahead.
Can you do my stairs the same day?
Sometimes, but it’s not a promise. A customer called while I was out in PoCo on a run of quotes, and her carpet was sitting at the store, so I picked it up and did her stairs that day. I charged $250 and she handed me $400, “for doing it today” (I tried to give her the change back). Usually I come out to measure within 2 to 3 days.
Do you carpet open staircases?
Yes. The staircase in these photos is open on the sides, so the carpet wraps around every tread: top, front and sides. It’s slow, careful work.
Do I need padding under carpet on stairs?
Yes. On the staircase in these photos, every tread got its own piece of pad before the carpet went on.
Will you warranty the stairs?
Yes, the same one-year warranty as everything I install. If stair carpet comes loose or bubbles within a year, I restretch it free. Pet damage, burns and vacuum snags aren’t covered.
Should I buy the stair carpet myself?
Yes. You buy it and I install it, the same as carpet replacement anywhere else in the house. I measure first and tell you how much to get, and I can pick it up from the store for about $50.
Can you take up the old stair carpet?
Yes, if you want it gone. Taking it up and hauling it away is priced at the measure, along with any other extras.
Who does the work?
Me and my son, nobody else. On stairs he does the kicking, which is the hard part, now that I’m getting older.
