Questions

Before you call

What people ask me on the phone and at the measure.

Will you warranty the work?

Yes, a one-year warranty on my workmanship, printed on my invoices. It covers carpet coming loose or apart, and if it bubbles within a year I restretch it free. It doesn’t cover pet damage, burns or vacuum snags. Flaws in the flooring itself fall under the store’s warranty.

How much does carpet replacement cost?

It’s priced by the square foot, and stairs by the step, with a minimum charge, plus any extras you need. You get the price at the measure, before anything is booked. The estimate is free in Mission, Maple Ridge, Abbotsford and Pitt Meadows, and $100 anywhere else, credited back if you go ahead.

What costs extra?

Taking up and hauling away the old carpet, moving furniture, fridges and stoves (not gas), picking up your carpet from the store (about $50), and transitions at the doorways. Concrete floors cost a bit more, because the carpet goes down on smooth edge. Every extra is on the quote before we book the day.

How much carpet should I buy?

Let me measure first. I’ll tell you how much to buy, almost to the exact amount, so you don’t overbuy. I install only and don’t sell carpet, but I can pick yours up from the store for about $50.

How soon can you come out?

Usually within 2 to 3 days to measure. If you’re in a panic, call and I’ll see what I can arrange. I keep you posted by text or phone the whole way.

Who does the work?

I do, with my son. He’s worked with me for 12 years, and these days he does the kicking, because I’m getting older. Nobody else turns up at your door.

What happens on install day?

We take up the old carpet, check the smooth edge around the walls and put down new underpad. Then we lay the carpet, seam it where it needs a seam, kick it tight and trim it clean. Transitions go in at the doorways, and the old carpet leaves with us if you’ve asked for that.

The seam looks like two colours. Is that the install?

Often it isn’t. The dye can run uneven across a roll, so two pieces of the same carpet look like two shades. It’s called side-to-side shading, and it comes from the manufacturer. I photograph it and take it to the store for you, to get it replaced through the manufacturer’s warranty.

I have a dog. Which carpet should I pick?

I’m a dog person myself, so I ask about pets at every measure. Claws catch the loops in a berber and pull tufts out, so a plush usually holds up better. Pet damage isn’t covered by the warranty, so it’s worth picking for the dog.
